1-2 and the Series win for WHEELBASE ALTURA MGD at the 2014 Chevin Cycles Race Series! Report by race organiser Sonja Harper
Adam Duggleby (WHEELBASE ALTURA MGD) wins round 6 and with it clinches the Chevin Cycle Evening Road Race Series in Yorkshire
The line up for the Grand Finale of the series, around the village of Saxton, looked like a who’s who of Yorkshire Cycling past and present. Notably, Sid Barras made his debut in the series, acting as the elder statesman in the first group to set out on the road whilst son Tom was often seen heading the scratch group in their chase.
Having said that, some of the riders on the night were making their debut into road racing. It seems that the success and popularity of the series can be attributed to the fact that riders of all abilities can race with each other on the open roads, amongst beautiful Yorkshire countryside to boot.
Handicapping riders into four groups means that a full, or near full, field of 80 riders have started the race each week. Tommy Bustard was defending his series leaders Green Jersey and looked like he meant business; he even invited his Dad along to cheer him on.
As the flag went down for the start, at the head of the race, the 4th cats also meant business . Their group stayed together (mostly) and successfully stayed away from their pursuers until the final couple of laps of the race. They scooped up the prime series points, in a sprint, at the end of the 2nd lap:
1st – Lee Morely – Ilkley CC2nd – Gavin Chatterton – Ingear Coaching Biemme3rd – Danny Winfield – Knottingly Velo
The third group on the road worked well together; they looked like they would be the 1st group to bridge the gap to the group in front but seemingly made a joint strategic decision to allow the scratch group to join their ranks first. Soon after on the 5th lap of 7, the second group were caught and soon after that the first group.
The ferocious pace set by the scratch group riders was now successful in shelling out many riders from the rear of the bunch. Attack followed attack on the final two laps; at times the riders were strung out along the county lanes.
Tommy Bustard (Velosure-Giordana RT) was seen to be closely marking his closest series rival Adam Duggleby ((WHEELBASE ALTURA MGD) ).
Tom Barras (WHEELBASE ALTURA MGD) put in a bold move as the bell went for the last lap – he couldn’t maintain his lead from the chasing bunch for long though. Jamie Sharp (York Cycleworks), similarly, then put in a convincing attack but Duggleby was definitely in the mood for a victory of race and series. He chased down Sharp and maintained his pace to commence a very early sprint well before the finishing straight.
Giles Pidcock (Chevin Cycles.com Trek), also in contention for the overall series win, could be seen tightly holding his wheel. Duggleby maintained his lead convincingly to the line. Tom Barras somehow emerged from the chasing bunch to pip Pidcock to the line for 2nd shunting Pidcock into a still very credible 3rd.
In terms of the series, this was Duggleby’s second victory, making him 1st overall and therefore awarded the Series Winner Chevin Cycles Green Jersey. Giles Pidcock was 2nd in the competion – the series has seen him, at age 47, still showing his younger rivals how to win a sprint on occasion.
In 3rd Tommy Bustard – not quite showing the form in the finale as he has in previous races. 4th Tom Barras and 5th Hamish Graham (Green Jersey RT).
