Wheelbase Altura MGD at National Crit Champs

- 09/07/2014 -

Full report direct from the Wheelbase team:

The National Elite Criterium Championships was this year held at Adam Duggleby’s home city of Hull.

The circuit was just over 1km, rough and technical with speed bumps, bricked pedestrian zones, pot holes and tight corners.

The race rolled out at 8pm with a number of Wheelbase Altura riders on the start line, Tom Barras was not feeling great and rode with a cold, Tom Murray, Alex Turner Simon Wilson, Adam Duggleby and Stuart Reid also there representing the team.

The race was really quick from the gun with a few guys attempting to ride away but with no luck. Adam Duggleby wanted to put on a good show in front of the home city with family and friends watching he stayed near the front of the race right from the start.
Stuart Reid had a few issues throughout the race puncturing twice and a number of Wheelbase riders getting caught behind a crash. They took a lap out and got back in.

The race continued at a blistering pace averaging over 27mph for the hour of racing, with Duggleby never far from the front. With just 10 laps to go there was a small lull in the speed, the group was down to around 20, Adam Blythe and Chris Opie attacked.
There was a bit of blocking from their teams and Duggleby took the opportunity to jump clear and ride across to the pair that had escaped putting in a massive effort to make the junction.

The trio had around 5-15 seconds but with only 4 laps remaining Duggleby just couldn’t sustain the pace of Adam Blythe who was relentlessly pushing the pace on to stay clear. Duggleby dropped back to the remaining field and then had to avoid collision with a dropped bottle in the final lap and finished 18th, some of the other Wheelbase riders rolling in as part of the second group whilst Blythe and Opie stayed away for the win.

Duggleby said ‘I really hoped to get a result in Hull, I did everything right and made the winning move but I just wasn’t good enough to ride with Blythe on the night’  ‘ I am now looking forward to the crits next week that actually suit me better so hopefully I’ll have a bit more success there!’

Wheelbase will be competing at Stockton Circuit race Friday, Stockton Velo29-Altura Grand Prix Sunday 13th July, Colne Elite Circuit Race 16th July, Beverley Elite Circuit Race 18th July in the next week!
